Viking Vegvisir (translated as compass) is a rune that purported to have navigational and protective functions . The rune is believed in Icelandic folklore to help people find the right path and protect them from danger and hardship.
Although a tradition of rune use did exist in Viking culture, there is actually no historical record that clearly states the source and origin of this particular rune, Vegvisir. In modern times, the Vegvisir rune has become a popular symbol in Viking art styles and Nordic culture.
The Vegvisir rune usually appears as a circular central point with multiple continuous straight lines around it, similar to a compass. According to legend, holders carved the rune on their bodies or objects in the belief that it would guide them in the right direction, whether at sea or on land.
Although the Vegvisir rune lacks conclusive historical sources, it is still widely noticed and appreciated as a cultural symbol. It is seen as a conjecture of Viking culture and Norse traditions, but is also associated with concepts such as navigation, travel and conservation ation.
